In the United States, a high-stakes piece of political theatre has played out in Washington with the former special counsel Robert Mueller answering questions in public for the first time.

In back-to-back hearings on Capitol Hill, the former FBI director has defended the integrity of his inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats have been keen to press him on Donald Trump's claim that the Mueller inquiry resulted in his "complete and total exoneration".
